Oceanside Highrise Foundation : Pouring a High Rise Foundation in Oceanside CA In February of 2006 construction began on what is now a high rise hotel on the beach in Oceanside, CA. I was driving by when they were laying the reinforcing bars for the foundation. The lines, shadows, the scale, the workers, materials, machinery, crane, and all the rest of it captured my attention and I felt compelled to document as much as I could. Earth Day April 2006 Balboa Park : Earth Day 2006 in Balboa Park Earth Day 2006 brought many hippies of all sizes, shapes, and ages and some non hippies to Balboa Park for a drum circle celebration. Many danced to the strong soulful rhythms of about 20-30 drums. It was so hard not to move in rhythm with the music and it was so magnetic it was a tough scene to walk away from. Leo Carrillo Ranch : Leo Carrillo Ranch Leo Carrillo (1880-1961) was an artist, poet, lyricist, vaudeville comic, legitimate stage actor appearing in 15 Broadway plays, and screen actor with 98 films to his credit. He was also a dedicated and influential environmentalist, conservationist and historic preservationist. He was Governor Earl Warren's campaign manager and later a member of the California State Beaches and Parks Commission. Those old enough will probably remember him best in his role as Pancho, sidekick to The Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo) in the 1950s TV movie series which ran for 156 episodes. He took that role on at 70 years old. Leo was not that fond of the Hollywood lifestyle and in 1937 purchased 840 acres in what is now Carlsbad, CA for an astonishing $25,000 to build a retreat and vacation home. By 1940 he had constructed not only a fine hacienda complex but also a full working cattle and horse ranch. A gracious host with many friends, he often welcomed friends such as Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Jane Withers, Will Rogers, Earl Warren and others who wanted to escape to a peaceful retreat. After Leo's death in 1961, parcels of land were slowly sold off for investment and development purposes and in 1977 10.5 acres, including all 18 major and minor historic structures, were dedicated to the City of Carlsbad for historic preservation and park land. Since then, the city has maintained, preserved, and restored the property to it's current condition. With so much history to be seen, it's a wonderful place to visit. Torrey Pines Bridge : Torrey Pines Bridge, Del Mar, CA Built in 1933, the Torrey Pines Bridge is one of the last remaining cast concrete bridges in California. The 553 foot bridge recently received a CalTrans sufficiency rating of 15 on a scale where 100 is perfect and 50 makes the bridge eligible for replacement. CalTrans insists the bridge is safe for normal daily traffic flow but probably would not withstand a local earthquake. Owned and maintained by the City of Del Mar, the city considers the bridge to bo one of it's local treasures and historic landmarks and intends to embark on a major retrofitting project to bring the bridge up to California earthquake standards. Really Long Haul : A Really Long Haul(er) This huge hauler was designed and built specifically for Southern California Edison to haul 4 used slightly radio active steam generator tanks from the San Onofre Nuclear Generator Station in Southern California for disposal in Clive, Utah, a journey of about 823 miles. The hauler is about 400 feet long, 20 feet wide, and weighs about 380 tons. It's supported by 192 tires on 48 axles. Each axle can be turned individually and there are 6 pivot points, 3 in front and 3 in the rear, so the rig can negotiate 90 degree turns in typical city intersections. It's max speed is 25 miles per hour but typically averages about 15 MPH. The trip is expected to take about 3 weeks. Once the tank is off loaded in Utah, the rig will be disassembled, it's parts loaded onto flat bed trailers, hauled back to San Onofre, reassembled, then the second tank will be loaded. The trip will be repeated 3 more times. Since many freeway overpasses were not designed to support the massive weight of the hauler, much of the trip will be over surface streets. The rig travels only at night to minimize traffic delays during the day time hours.
