Carlsbad CA Police Department, California Highway Patrol, MADD Sobriety Check Point

On Saturday night, August 30th, 2008 Carlsbad CA Police and California Highway Patrol conducted their annual joint sobriety check point in honor of two CHP officers who were run down by drunk drivers on the I5 freeway within Carlsbad city limits. One officer was off the main roadway conducting a follow up to an earlier accident investigation and the other was on the shoulder conducting a routine traffic stop. In both cases, drunk drivers wandered off the main travel lanes striking and killing the officers. Each officer left behind a young family including several young children.

This checkpoint was rather uneventful. In the four hours I was there I saw only three sobriety tests and one arrest. Hopefully, people are finally getting the message that drinking and driving is not worth the risk.
