Carlsbad CA Police Department and California Highway Patrol Joint Sobriety Check Point
On Friday night, August 28th, 2009 Carlsbad CA Police and California Highway Patrol conducted their annual joint sobriety check point in honor of two CHP officers,
Sean Nava and
Stephen Linen, who were run down by drunk drivers on the I-5 freeway within Carlsbad city limits. Officer Nava was off the main roadway conducting a follow up to an earlier accident investigation. Officer Linen was on the shoulder conducting a routine traffic stop. In both cases, drunk drivers wandered off the main travel lanes striking and killing the officers. Each officer left behind a young family including several young children.
This checkpoint was rather uneventful. Of approximately 600 cars that passed through between 7:00PM and midnight, there was one arrest for DUI alcohol, one for DUI narcotics, one for felony possession of narcotics, and 26 citations issued for miscellaneous violations. Hopefully, people are finally getting the message that drinking and driving is not worth the risk.
